Interior Educators (IE) is the national subject association which represents well-established Interior Design, Interior Architecture and Spatial Design degree programmes the in UK and Ireland. Established and run by academics as a charity, IE is a unique group; it provides a forum for debate and the exchange of ideas and practice effecting the education of designers of interior space. Founded in 2006, IE now represents more than 50 institutional members.
IE’s main objectives are to advance and promote Interiors education, to share and advocate best practice in Higher Education teaching, to represent Interiors education at national and international level, to link with other organisations with shared values, and to fund research and alleviate hardship within Interiors education.
As part of this mission, IE runs an annual exhibition of student work, as well as a student awards system to recognise outstanding achievement in both design and writing. This is the first time IE has exhibited student work at OXO.
Social equity, inclusivity, diversity, sustainability and collaboration sit at the heart of what IE is and does. These values also underpin the nature of the degree programmes IE represents. IE also believes that design – and the design of interiors in all its forms – should be socially useful. These values underpin this year’s student awards system.
The last year has, of course, been a challenging time globally. For educators and our students the Covid pandemic has forced dramatic changes to our practices. It has also prompted a period of deep reflection. As we see a potential end to the pandemic, we all have to question how society adapts, resettles and reforms. As interior designers/architects, we see this as an opportunity to re-think and re-define how society imagines and occupies its spaces (both public and private).
IE is embracing this unusual year by hosting a smaller-than-usual event at the OXO Gallery to bring together its members and the work of its students – with an important online presence. As part of this event, we invite discussion to re-define the subject of, and teaching of, Interiors and related disciplines.
