Interior Design (BA Hons)
About the course
Join a professionally-focused course. Develop the design and technological skills you need to graduate ready to progress into industry. Understand the role of sustainability in design, and apply biophilic design which promotes individual health and wellbeing in the interior environment. You’ll hear from design professionals in lectures, work on live industry projects and undertake essential work placements at design companies, ready for your career. Recent destinations have included Brinkworth, Turner Bates and Aecom. You’ll also have the opportunity to visit Europe on a residential field trip with options including exploring creative interiors in Berlin, Barcelona or Prague.
In your first year you’ll create and experiment using industry-standard CAD and visual communication software. You’ll examine spatial design and sustainability, exploring the role of the ‘interior’ in the design and construction process. You’ll be encouraged to think outside the box and begin developing your own creative style while experiencing interdisciplinary team working, drawing and model-making. In your second year you’ll work on client-led briefs for retail, leisure, workplace, museum and exhibition spaces. You’ll refine your skills in aesthetics focusing on colour, materials, light and atmosphere, using intelligent CAD Building Information Modelling software (BIM) to test biophilic principles. In your final year you’ll select opportunities based on the future design pathway you want to follow, with the opportunity to exhibit your final project at Free Range in London, a graduate exhibition attracting international design employers.
With a professional focus, the course includes business contracts, building construction, writing specifications, costing and tendering. You’ll work towards securing a summer work placement– we’ll support you to find it – and create your own brand and portfolio, ready for your career.
