BA (Hons) Interior Design

About the course

With a creative design studio focus, BA(Hons) Interior Design at Northumbria University has a commercial outlook and produces graduates who are able to work within and ultimately make directional contributions to the interior design industry.

Successful interior design solutions evolve through the study and understanding of brand, function, materials, space, form, service and human interaction, all set in the context of industrial practice. This ensures that responses to interior design briefs are creative and offer new design thinking, which enable solutions to be user centred and boundary pushing.

Design projects are set in the context of existing or new architectural spaces and you can expect to be involved in the re-use and design of these spaces through retail, bar and restaurant, museum, exhibition and public sector design projects. With an emphasis upon individuality, the development of student creativity and independent thinking, risk taking is encouraged. The outcome will be a graduate who has an awareness of the design industry as a whole and is able to define their place within it.

A key feature of the programme is our strong links with industry which means that you will have the opportunity to work on live briefs with design practices such as FaulknerBrowns Architects, Gensler and Dalziel and Pow. There are also opportunities to collaborate with a range of businesses such as Topshop, Dance City and Live Theatre in a design project context.

Our graduates work as interior designers for leading design companies and architectural practices across the UK and abroad, such as Foster and Partners, Met Studio, tp bennett, Sheppard Robson, Sheridan and Co, Paul Smith and Zebra.
