Focus:

  • Rigour in the interpretation of the conference theme
  • Conceptual depth and relevance to contemporary issues
  • Translation of abstract ideas into interior proposals
  • Innovation and critical positioning within the theme
  • Coherence between concept, process, and experiential outcome

Why:

This award aligns student work with the evolving intellectual agenda of Interior Educators, responding directly to conference themes (Imagining Interiors 2025-2026), positioning students as contributors to contemporary discourse through spatial and experiential exploration and debate. This keeps the awards dynamic and forward-looking.

Responding to the 2025 ‘Imagining Interiors’ conference at Edinburgh College of Art, submissions in this category should respond to:

Imagining Interiors’ is a deliberately ambiguous title, that can refer both to the process of making things up, creating, dreaming and describing; and also, more literally, to the activity of making images. In The Emergence of the Interior (2008) the interior historian Charles Rice writes of the ‘doubleness’ of the designed interior – both as a space to be occupied, and an image to be contemplated. Seventeen years on, in a world saturated by images imagined by machines, what might that doubleness actually mean? What opportunities might it present to design, build, and occupy – imagine – interiors?
