About James Engel

James [JimE] Engel is a Design Architect and Educator with a passion for how design can solve everyday problems and improve our wellbeing. In parallel with his special skills at nurturing design talent through University, James established a cross disciplinary design studio, Spaced Out in 1995. Working in tandem with degree courses at UCL, the University of Westminster, Greenwich University and now heading-up Architecture and 3D Design at the University of Northampton, James has designed and delivered works of Architecture, Interiors, Installation, Bespoke Furniture and Mass Produced Products. His influence has shaped projects in the Far East, North America and Europe, with other more recent links into Central and South America. In the UK, projects have been aired on TV (Grand Designs -The Contemporary Mansion, Series 11, Episode 2), and in numerous exhibitions for Glasgow Museums, The Arts Council of England, the Southbank Centre, the Whitechapel Art Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery. James believes in the power of collaborations, working closely with other Artists, Architects and Designers to deliver extraordinary projects and exhibitions that have brought about change. Change to the ways in which we see the world and more critically the way in which we understand how design can help to improve our sense of wellbeing, whether as individuals, focused groups or whole communities. With the University of Northampton, James is focused on delivering an innovative contemporary curriculum for all the courses within the 3D FAST arena.
